Las Vegas Constables Get Embarrassing

Most Las Vegas residents who have had to deal with local constables already know that these "half-cops" aren't the most professional people in the world. They foreclose homes, serve legal papers, and even pull drivers over on the road (even though they're not really supposed to!). But now a new video recently posted on Youtube shows the Vegas constables office is actually much worse than we thought:

Constable offices from surrounding cities -- including North Las Vegas, Henderson, and Boulder City -- are already doing their best to distance themselves from this fiasco. They've addressed their concerns to the Clark County Commission, with one Henderson constable even saying this:
"For the past 12 years, we’ve cleaned up the professionalism of the office... That, I’ll be honest, has been destroyed in the last 12 months."
Las Vegas Metro Police have their own, more serious, problems to deal with. The fact that the city constables are basically acting like jackasses embarasses the entire city of Las Vegas. Thanks guys, just what we need right now!

Nevada Considers Online Sales Tax, Pisses Off Amazon.com

Nevada's offline brick-and-mortar retailers want the state to start collecting sales taxes on online purchases. They say doing so will even the playing field and remove a major advantage web-based sellers have. State officials are giddy over the prospect of lots of new tax revenue, which would be about $32 million in the first 2 years alone.

Amazon.com is, understandably, PISSED OFF about the idea an is already threatening to abandon its investment in supply-chain fulfillment centers/warehouses in Nevada. According to one Vice President:
"[the new legislation] would make us reconsider our pending plans for jobs and investment in Nevada, including in Las Vegas."
That's not good news for a state that is struggling with huge unemployment levels.

Some experts say that the new tax laws are designed to help small local retailers and to protect and even bring back jobs lost due to the "unfair" advantage online retailers like Amazon have. But in reality the multi-billion dollar retail giants like Wal-Mart and Target are the ones really pushing the online sales tax legislation in Nevada and other parts of the US.

We say: TAXES SUCK! Instead of making online stores charge high sales taxes, why don't we try lowering or removing sales taxes on offline sales in the state. We have a feeling a LOT more people would be shopping in Nevada!

Nevada Now Has Highest Unemployment Rate

The state of Nevada now boasts the highest unemployment rate in the US, finally beating out Michigan and it's dying manufacturing industries. Statistically, the official number is 14% unemployment. Unofficially, the "real" unemployment rate is probably much higher in Nevada and especially in the Las Vegas area.

There are about 190,000 Nevada residents without jobs, according to state figures. Yet the true figure is much, much larger due to the large number of Nevadans who have stopped filing for unemployment benefits.

The economy in Southern Nevada is probably the worst in the entire country and has yet to experience any of the recovery taking parts in most of the rest of the United States. It's kind of ironic since not too long ago Las Vegas boasted the fastest-growing economy, job market, and population of all major US cities.

Nevada's jobless rate has skyrocketed since the Great Recession began in 2007, jumping nearly 9 percentage points. With an economy that's nearly completely based around gaming, hospitality, and construction -- 3 of the worst-hit industries -- it's obvious the Nevada is going to have to take some big steps toward diversifying itself in order to create new jobs.
