Most Voters Say The Country Is On Wrong Track
On election day in the US, the majority of voters think the country is on the wrong track, according to exit poll data. The sluggish economy seems to be the biggest reason. Despite this, President Obama is expected to win re-election over Mitt Romney and voters are generally much more optimistic than they were during the last election in 2008.
Exit polls that year showed about 75% of voters believed the country was headed in the wrong direction. Of course, the country was in the middle of an economic implosion and mired in 2 major wars at the time.
According to results from early voting exit polling done by NBC News over the past few weeks, around 52 percent of voters think the country is one the wrong track while 46 percent think it was headed in the right direction. Yet 53% of voters think the federal government is doing too much.
About 60% of people polled think the economy is the most important issue currently facing the US. Of those, most chose unemployment as the biggest issue, followed closely by rising prices, with taxes and housing near the bottom.
Data from the polls showed a very sharp divide between supporters and opponents of Obamacare. About a quarter of early voters want to see the health care program totally repealed and about 23% want some of it repealed. Another 25% actually want to see the program expanded to provide health coverage for more people at lower cost.
We say: It's really interesting to see that so many people think the country is headed in the wrong direction but, at the same time, most people want the federal government to do less... not more! We have to say we agree that serious changes need to be made, especially in terms of boosting the economy, but more government programs are definitely not the best way to do that.

Las Vegas Has a New Mayor... Kind Of
For the first time since 1999 Las Vegas, Nevada has a new mayor. Carolyn Goodman easily won today's mayoral election in Sin City. She will replace her famous husband Oscar Goodman, who's only stepping down becomes of term-limit rules.Goodman got over 60% of the vote, beating the pants off of Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani. In a relatively unexciting election race, she promised to continue to build on her husband's work. Turning around Vegas's horrible economy is, according to Goodman, job number 1 (we agree!).
The Goodmans say they are the "Happiest Couple in the Universe" and most Vegas locals assume that Oscar will have A LOT of influence during his wife's term. That's probably both a good thing, since he was one of the most colorful and interesting mayors in US history.
We say: We like Oscar a lot and we hope he and Carolyn can turn things around in our home city. Hopefully they'll continue to push development in Downtown while helping to improve overall tourism numbers. Also, we sincerely hope that Oscar continues to show up at important public events with martinis and super-sexy Vegas showgirls at every possible opportunity!

US Senators Introduce New Energy Bill
Two of the top US senators introduced a new comprehensive and sweeping energy bill today. John Kerry and Joe Lieberman say that their new bill will help to end US dependence on foreign oil while helping to keep US industry competitive.
According to Kerry the bill will work toward turning US energy policy into a strength instead of a weakness.
The bill seeks to fix several major energy problems by expanding nuclear power production, providing incentives for "clean coal" technology development, spending money to develop alternative energy sources (including solar and wind), and developing program to help US industry transition to lower-carbon systems.

US Congress Passes Historic Health Care Bill
The United States has taken a major step toward providing near-universal medical coverage for all its citizens. On Sunday the US Congress voted 219-212 to send a bill to President Obama's desk that would expand coverage to millions of Americans, prevent insurance companies from denying coverage to people with "pre-existing" conditions, and (theoretically at least) reduce deficits over the next few decades. The bill, once signed into law, could completely transform the country and cause huge changes in the Amercian insurance and health care industries. According to President Obama:
"This is what change looks like... We proved that this government — a government of the people and by the people — still works for the people."

US Health Care Bill Gets Passed in the House!
Last night the US House of Representatives passed the controversial health reform bill that will theoretically provide health care coverage to nearly every American citizen, place tough new restrictions on insurance companies, and possibly even begin to lower the out-of-control costs of medicine in the United States. President Barack Obama says that now it's the Senate's turn to pass the legislation so that he can sign it into law.
According to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi:
Lots of people are happy that the government is trying to make health care available and affordable to all Americans, but the questions still linger: can we pay for it and can the government actually run it efficiently??
According to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi:
“For nearly a century, leaders of every party and political philosophy – as far back as Teddy Roosevelt - have called for health care for the American people... For generations, the American people have called for affordable, quality health care for their families. Today, the call will be answered.”
